Marriage Check List

CONGRATULATIONS! May God bless both of you as you begin your marriage. You are entering into a bond of love that God has called you to share. It is a high calling, a vocation from God, in which you join in a partnership of love and life.    

Please schedule an initial meeting with Fr. Palatucci. You can contact him either through the parish phone number or by emailing [email protected]. During this meeting, you'll review the date, time, and other important details necessary to move forward with your marriage. 
The marriage requirements for St. John the Evangelist - St. Charles Borromeo are as follows. Please read this carefully:    

• Every couple should complete the Catholic Couple Checkup and Pre-Cana.  Father Palatucci will instruct you on how to complete these. 
• You are required to have a minimum of three meetings with the clergy member officiating your marriage.     
• The first meeting needs to take place at least six months in advance. Fr. Palatucci will schedule the second one, usually two to three months prior to the wedding.  
• We will cover everything needed at this time and ensure all your documentation is complete. During this meeting, you will complete the PMI (Pre-Marriage Investigation). These are questions and requirements for individuals seeking marriage in the Catholic Church. It is straightforward yet detailed and will become part of your permanent record.  
• The final meeting will serve as the rehearsal.  
• The couple must obtain a marriage license from New York State. No wedding can happen without it. You can obtain it at any county clerk's office in the State of New York. Please do not wait until the last minute. There is a 24-hour waiting period before the license becomes valid. Allow at least one week to get it.   Bring the license to the rehearsal on the designated day. It needs to be signed by the clergy in front of two witnesses. After the marriage, the clergy will collect the license and mail it.   
•  The fee for registered parishioners is $500.00, or $750.00 for non-parishioners or those choosing to marry here because it’s near a local reception venue.   All proceeds go to the parish, not the clergy. A tip for the presiding clergy is appreciated but not required. If you face financial difficulties, the marriage fees can be reduced or waived entirely. Please talk to Fr. Palatucci about this.
• Marriages are conducted in English or in bilingual English/Spanish. The parish cannot currently offer a marriage entirely in Spanish.  No clergy member here speaks fluent Spanish. 
• You must gather all your sacramental records: Baptismal, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation certificates. Ensure they are the most recent copies, not the original ones received at the time of the sacrament. Please contact the parish where you received your sacraments and bring the documents to our parish. It is important to remember that no sacramental records will be accepted without the proper parish seal stamped on them. You may send an email copy, but we also need a hard copy as well.   
• If you have been previously married, you must notify the clergy immediately to discuss your next steps. 
• You will need two affidavit witnesses to confirm your prior relationship and separation.
• Catholics usually marry during a Mass, but a ceremony without a Mass is also valid. The main difference is that Holy Communion is not distributed during the ceremony. Ask the clergy member about your best option.    
• If a guest Catholic clergy member is officiating the marriage, they must be in good standing with their diocese or religious order and provide proof of this status. They then need to request delegation either by submitting a letter on their parish letterhead that includes the parish seal or by calling the pastor directly. This process must be completed within two weeks of the wedding.  
• If the marriage is interfaith, the clergy of the other denomination is welcome to witness the wedding here. Please have them call the parish office and speak to the pastor. If they are Christian, they may not wear their religious garb or stole unless they are part of the Eastern Orthodox Church.    
• A Nuptial Mass cannot be offered if the marriage is between a baptized Catholic and a non-Catholic. No exceptions. It will only be a ceremony. 
• If you have a prenuptial agreement, you must submit a copy to the parish and keep it with the marriage records.   
• This parish does not offer Traditional Latin Mass weddings. If this si youre preferred form, Fr. Palatucci will give you a letter of freedom to present to a parish that does. The closest one from here is Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie, NY.
• The couple must be registered at a parish where they have lived for at least six months.  If you reside in a different parish, you must first contact that parish to arrange your marriage there. Often, the pastor will handle all the marriage requirements unless he requests that St. John's take care of them. You will need a letter of freedom from either or both parties, as well as two affidavits signed by witnesses.     
• If you plan to marry in a different diocese outside the Archdiocese of New York or in another country, specific protocols must be followed well in advance. Since these procedures can be time-consuming and may involve sending documents overseas, everything must be completed with our parish at least 3 months before the wedding day.   
• Your records and information will be submitted to the chancery office of the diocese where the marriage occurs. The clergy at St. John's will be happy to handle this for you. We will send it to the New York Archdiocese Chancery Office, which will then forward it to the chancery office of the diocese where the marriage is taking place.   
• For music, please contact the parish office, and we will direct you to the musicians available for our wedding.

• Deben reunir todos sus registros sacramentales: certificados de Bautismo, Primera Comunión y Confirmación. Asegúrense de que sean las copias más recientes, y no los originales recibidos en el momento de la celebración del sacramento. Por favor, comuníquense con la parroquia donde recibieron sus sacramentos y traigan los documentos a nuestra parroquia. • Si alguno de ustedes ha estado casado anteriormente, debe notificar al clérigo de inmediato para conversar sobre los pasos a seguir.
• Necesitarán dos testigos que firmen una declaración jurada para confirmar su relación previa y su separación.
• Por lo general, los católicos se casan durante una Misa; sin embargo, una ceremonia sin Misa también es válida. La diferencia principal radica en que no se distribuye la Sagrada Comunión durante dicha ceremonia. Consulten con el clérigo cuál es la mejor opción para ustedes.
• Si un clérigo católico invitado va a oficiar el matrimonio, este debe estar en buena situación canónica (en regla) con su diócesis u orden religiosa, y debe presentar pruebas que acrediten dicho estatus. Posteriormente, deberá solicitar la delegación de facultades, ya sea enviando una carta con el membrete de su propia parroquia (incluyendo el sello parroquial) o llamando directamente al párroco. Este trámite debe completarse dentro de las dos semanas previas a la boda.
• Si se trata de un matrimonio interreligioso, el clérigo de la otra denominación es bienvenido para presenciar la boda en nuestras instalaciones. Por favor, pídale que llame a la oficina parroquial y hable con el párroco. Si dicho clérigo es cristiano, no podrá vestir su indumentaria religiosa ni su estola, a menos que pertenezca a la Iglesia Ortodoxa Oriental.        No se puede celebrar una Misa Nupcial si el matrimonio es entre un católico bautizado y una persona no católica. No hay excepciones. Será únicamente una ceremonia.
• Si tienen un acuerdo prenupcial, deben presentar una copia a la parroquia para que se archive junto con los registros matrimoniales.
• Esta parroquia no ofrece bodas con la Misa Latina Tradicional. Si esta es su preferencia, el Padre Palatucci les entregará una carta de libertad para que la presenten en una parroquia que sí ofrezca este rito. La parroquia más cercana a este lugar es Holy Trinity, en Poughkeepsie, NY. 
• La pareja debe estar registrada en una parroquia en la que haya residido durante al menos seis meses. Si ustedes residen en el territorio de otra parroquia, primero deben ponerse en contacto con ella para gestionar la celebración de su matrimonio allí. A menudo, el párroco de dicha iglesia se encargará de todos los requisitos matrimoniales, a menos que solicite que sea la parroquia de St. John's la que se ocupe de ellos. Necesitarán una carta de libertad de uno o de ambos contrayentes, así como dos declaraciones juradas firmadas por testigos.
